In sport, there are moments when the result can be seen on the course. But many of those moments begin much earlier – in training sessions, daily guidance, the correction of small details, the development of good habits and, above all, in the consistent work that takes place away from the spotlight.
That behind-the-scenes work is also part of the story behind the six young golfers from the Palheiro Golf Club Academy who have qualified for the 2026 Drive Challenge National Final, taking place on 10 and 11 October at Jamor.
The Club will be represented by Íris Costa (Under-12), Salvador Rodrigues, José Pedro Miranda and Lucas Duarte (Under-16), and André Gonçalves and Rodrigo Abreu (Under-18), competing alongside young golfers from different regions of Portugal.
For the Academy, this participation represents more than a place in a national competition. It reflects an ongoing development process, in which each young player is supported progressively, combining technical and competitive development with independence, responsibility and the values that are part of the game of golf.
Behind these opportunities is a team working together throughout the season. Golf professional Edgar Rodrigues leads the technical coaching and preparation of the young players, while teacher Nuno Lopes, seconded to the Academy, provides valuable additional support within its training programme. The overall process is coordinated by Sulamita Neves, Academy Director, ensuring continuity, organisation and coordination across the different areas of the programme.
The competition will begin on Sunday, 11 October, following the preparation and course-recognition activities scheduled for the previous day.
For the Academy, seeing the work carried out throughout the season result in six places at a National Final is a rewarding moment – and a motivation to keep doing what happens behind the scenes every day, where much of a young athlete’s development truly takes place.
